What is the Ketogenic Diet?
The Ketogenic diet, Keto for short, is a diet that promotes the metabolic formation of ketone bodies which cause the body to use stored fat, rather than carbohydrates and glucose (sugar) as its principal energy source.
How does it work?
The ketogenic diet is a low carb, moderate protein, and high healthy fat diet (LCHF) which puts the body into a metabolic state known as ketosis. When you’re body is in a state of ketosis, the liver produce ketones which become the main energy source for the body. The ketones convert fat into energy.

Hi, my name is Dana Choate. I am a wife, mother of 8 children, and a Health and Wellness Coach. I am also a medical and nutrition student. I am always studying how nutrition impacts our overall health, and how natural medicine and nutrition work together.
My keto journey began when my doctor told me I was pre diabetic and I had high blood pressure. She wanted to do some blood work to see where my numbers were. After doing the blood work, we discovered that it was worse than we thought. My numbers were so close to borderline that the doctor said if I can’t bring the numbers within normal ranges I would have to use insulin. I told her I would do some studying, and that I would schedule a follow up for a later date to discuss some options. I had lost my stepmother to diabetic coma and saw what the use of insulin had done to her body. I was mortified that I had let my health slip to that point. I was overweight, feeling constantly sluggish, and my brain was in a thick fog. “How could I be diabetic!!” was my first thought, especially since I have no family history of diabetes. Cancer would have been less surprising to me because of my family history. Needless to say, I never scheduled that follow up, instead, I decided to look into eating differently to control my ever rising blood sugar and increasing insulin resistance in a way that didn’t involve using medication.
Let the research begin, I am a medical student, surely I could look up research studies and figure out something that would be effective in stabilizing my blood sugars. I wasn’t about to give up on my health, or give in to the pharmaceutical companies just yet. I began researching diabetes and diets. I knew the American Diabetes Association recommended a low carb, low sugar, low fat and whole grain diet to control diabetes. But something didn’t quite add up. If they wanted people to eat low carbs why did they recommend food that were so high in carbs?? Seems like a logical question right? I thought so too! That’s when I stumbled across an add for exogenous ketones. For the record, I am in no way promoting exogenous ketones! Most people don’t need them, don’t waste your money unless you do further research. The word ketones tickled a place in the back of my memory from my anatomy class, “ketones…..hmmm….that’s familiar, but why?” I looked it up and by chance came across a video by Dr Berry on YouTube. What a lifesaver that was for me, though I didn’t realize it at the time! That was my first discovery of the ketogenic diet and I haven’t looked back since.
At the beginning of my keto journey my start weight was about 217 lbs ( I ranged from 215 – 220), give or take. At my heaviest I was about 220 lbs. I am currently 185 lbs (***update 148 lbs), still losing, and still on my weight loss journey. My goal weight is 135 lbs. My blood sugars are within normal ranges, my blood pressure is normal, and I feel fantastic!
I was diagnosed in December 2018 with an autoimmune disease and am learning to manage it also using diet therapy and nutrition. I love sharing the tools I use and what I have learned with others who also suffer from different autoimmune disease.
I have spent large portions of my days researching the keto way of eating, scouring textbooks, medical research papers, and books by various doctors on nutrition, and I am going to share my knowledge with whomever will listen. I invite anyone who has the desire to get healthy to let me assist you on your journey as you join me on mine.
